Whimsical
Watamu
Kenya's coast is beautiful and only an
hour's plane ride away if you don't count 3 hours extra each way for Nairobi
traffic and airport hassles.
So with almost the same group with whom we traveled to Tsavo, we rented a very
Alice-through-the looking-glass beach house south of
Malindi and north of Mombasa. Lots of fun, drinks, and great fresh seafood
cooked to order!

(Above Far L) WW & Greg stand on the back porch in front of painted
African women and only a few feet from the pet geese that noisily
chatted and roamed the yard. The house is colorfully painted, mosaic
glass on everything, and weird blown glass is perched everywhere.
(Above L) Sheila and Anna relax on the veranda (painted Vervet monkey
overhead) with dawas (potent Swahili drink, meaning
medicine--with vodka, sugar & muddled limes) in hand watching the
sunset. Inside, the fish quietly swim on the walls (Above & Far R). |

(Above Far L) About 300 yards behind the house, through jungle-like
bush, is a gorgeous beach. (Above L) A friendly dog greets us
on our walk.
The weather is fickle from moment to moment. (Above & Far R)
As we walk up the beach toward home, clouds threaten. Then Sheila
snaps our
photo literally 1 minute later and the sky in the other direction is
cloudless! |

The house rental came with a cook and a cleaner. The cook
connected us with fresh seafood, fruit, and even massages for a few
of us.
(Above Far L) Saturday night dinner consisted of 4 Kilos of
freshly-cooked garlic prawns and 3 lobsters 2 Kilos each (before
cooking).
To say we had a great time at dinner (drinking dawas before and all
remaining wine) was an understatement. Just look at Rick
(Above L & R) being ventriloquist for his eaten lobster, then
laughing himself silly. (Above Far R) WW is not amused--just
drunk & sleepy. |

(Above Far & Center L) But after dinner, we all played card games
that were quite silly and the most we could handle in our inebriated
state.
(Above R) One last view of the back yard and Indian Ocean, then the
same from inside, through the blue "looking" glass (Above Far R).
